Security Explorer For Sharepoint
Version: 6.6

Security Explorer® - Licensing

  • How is Security Explorer licensed?
    • Security Explorer uses two types of license: server and workstation.

      - “Server” licenses allow you to use all management modes (file permissions, file shares, printers, registry, services and tasks) on named Windows servers
      - “Workstation” licenses allow you to use all management modes on Windows workstations, and (for customers who previously owned Service Explorer licenses) also to manage services and tasks on Windows servers. The number of computers that can be managed in a single operation is limited to the number of workstation licenses

At the time of writing, a “server” is defined as a computer running a Windows Server operating system: Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003. A “workstation” is defined as a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Workstation, Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Customers can buy any combination of server and workstation licenses.

Security Explorer 6 automatically recognizes and upgrades in-maintenance Service Explorer 2 and Security Explorer 5 licenses to the appropriate license, so existing customers will not lose functionality.

It doesn't matter how many CPUs or NICs a server has – one server computer requires one license. For clustered servers, each node in the cluster requires one license. For DFS, one license is required for every server computer being managed, even if they all files are visible through one root share.

For NAS and SAN systems, it is only the number of servers that is counted – not the number or structure of disk arrays.

  • I am an existing Service Explorer customer. What happens to my license?
    • All functions previously provided by Service Explorer have been enhanced and integrated into Security Explorer 6. Existing Service Explorer customers will find that their existing licenses are automatically converted into “workstation licenses” for Security Explorer 6, which give them the same functionality that they had previously with some new enhancements, e.g. single-click change-and-set passwords for service logon accounts, advanced properties dialogs for services.

  • I am an existing Security Explorer customer. What happens to my license?
    • Existing Security Explorer 5 customers will find that their licenses are automatically converted into “server” licenses for Security Explorer 6, which give them the same functionality that they had previously with some new enhancements, e.g. cached browsing, inheritance repair, new User Interface.

  • I am a customer of both Security Explorer and Service Explorer. What do I do?
    • Contact your sales rep, or our Sales Administration department at sales@scriptlogic.com. ScriptLogic will issue you a new license file with the “workstation” license count set to your existing Service Explorer license count and the “server” license count set to your existing Security Explorer license count. This will ensure that you do not lose any functionality.

  • What is “Free” mode?
    • When Security Explorer first starts it will ask whether you wish to operate in “Free” or “Licensed/Evaluation” mode. If you have an existing Security Explorer or Service Explorer license, or if you wish to run a standard evaluation then select Licensed/Evaluation mode. Free mode is a highly restricted mode only usable on local workstation computers (e.g. Windows XP), and will not operate on Windows Server operating systems. Free mode will not let you manage remote computers. NOTE THAT SUPPORT IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FREE MODE.

  • Do I need a license for every server or workstation on my network?
    • No. You only need a license for every server or workstation on which you will manage permissions. Note that server licenses behave as "named server" licenses – each license is permanently assigned to a server when you manage permissions on it.

      Example:

We have 20 Windows servers, 5 of them are file servers with complex NTFS permissions set on the folders and files on them which we are struggling to manage. To manage the 5 file servers with Security Explorer you need 5 licenses.

  • What license quantities are available?
    • Server licenses are available in any quantity. Workstation licenses are available in any quantity with a minimum of 50.

  • Can I move licenses from one server to another?
    • Each license becomes permanently assigned to a server the first time that you use Security Explorer to modify permissions on that server. If you have completely retired a server from your network and will never use Security Explorer to manage its permissions again then contact ScriptLogic Technical Support who can provide an authorization code to release the license from that server.

      Example 1:

A new administrator learned how to use Security Explorer by modifying permissions on a test server. Now they want to manage one of the file servers but they are 1 license short because a license has been permanently assigned to that test server. ScriptLogic Technical Support can provide a code to release the license.

      Example 2:

I have 25 servers, but I intend to retire 10 old ones after using Security Explorer. Do I need 25 licenses or 15? You need to purchase 25 licenses. However, when you retire the 10 old servers you will be able to re-use those 10 licenses on new servers.

  • What happens if I exceed my license count?
    • When all your server licenses have been assigned to active servers then you will not be able to manage permissions on any further servers. Contact your reseller or ScriptLogic representative to purchase more licenses.

Workstation licenses are not permanently assigned to computers, but in a single operation you can only manage as many computers as you have workstation licenses.

  • Is an evaluation license available? What restrictions does it have?
    • Yes, a 30-day evaluation license is available from www.scriptlogic.com. The evaluation license will only let you manage permissions on 2 servers for up to 2500 "objects" (files, folders, shares, printers or registry keys) in the file permissions, file shares, printers and registry management modes. Searches on domains are disabled during evaluation. You can also search for up to 100 computers in the services and tasks management modes, but the evaluation license will not let you make any changes.

  • Can I extend my evaluation?
    • You can request an extension for an evaluation license at www.scriptlogic.com.

  • Is there a limit to the number of places I can run the Security Explorer console?
    • No.

      Example:

I have 15 administrators who need to manage permissions on our 10 file servers from their desktop computers by installing Security Explorer on those desktop computers. In this case you would only need 10 licenses.
